A rammer, sometimes called a jumping jack compactor or tamper, is a handheld machine that delivers powerful impact force to compact soil in tight spaces. Unlike vibratory plate compactors, rammers use a high-frequency pounding motion to drive soil particles closer together, making them particularly effective for compacting cohesive soils such as clay and silt, which require greater force to eliminate air pockets.
Rammers are ideally suited for compaction of backfill around foundations and forms, subgrades underneath footings, and base preparation for concrete work such as slabs, curbs, and gutters. Their slim profile and powerful vertical impact make them the go-to choice for trench work, utility repairs, and any confined area where larger equipment cannot reach.
Modern four-stroke engine rammers feature refined shock-isolation systems that significantly minimise handle vibration, allowing for fatigue-free operation. Height-adjustable handles, intuitive single-lever controls, and built-in transport wheels ensure ease of use across a wide range of job-site conditions.
